I am the space where I am

I am the space where I am is an evolving exhibition built from the corners of other people’s homes. Through conversations with local residents in an area shaped by migration, the project explores how ideas of home, belonging, and arrival are continually negotiated. Participants are invited to describe one corner of their home and the object(s) that live there. These accounts become portraits of care, improvisation, displacement, and the small architectures people build for themselves. Each conversation is guided by a paper fortune teller – a simple, familiar device that introduces play, chance, and plenty more corners.

The resulting ‘corner’ texts are then presented inside the partnering arts venue, taking up space in a place that may not always feel has been built for all.

I am the space where I am attempts, even if only temporarily, to create a way in – starting with people whose sense of belonging is continually questioned and extending outward to all ‘new arrivals’ in the room. It becomes a collective opening, a threshold between home and institution, inviting people to gently reshape what we recognise as curated spaces and objects of value.
